Black Hill Energy Violations & Investigation

Black Hills Energy is now being investigated by the Iowa Utilities Commission after regulators diagnosed an unusually high number of probable pipeline-safety violations within the Iowa system.

The recent investigation took place after a June 2025 inspection of BHE’s Spencer and surrounding area operations spotted more than 100 safety issues across 16 categories. After a hearing last week, regulators also showed data proving Black Hills Energy presented nearly 3 times as many probable violations per 1,000 service lines as Iowa’s other two major natural-gas utilities between 2023-2025. BHE states diligently working to remedy the deficiencies and improve their operations.

BHE provides natural gas to Charles City, Forest City, Lake Mills, Rockford, Greene, St. Ansgar, New Hampton, Fertile, Mitchell, and among many others in the surrounding area.
