BREAKING: Clarksville Softball, Newman Catholic Baseball Claim State Titles

For the second year in a row, Clarksville is the Class 1A State Softball Champion.

In the state title game Friday (07.24) in Fort Dodge, the Indians topped Edgewood-Colesburg 5-2 to claim back-to-back crowns. It’s the only game in this year’s State Softball Tournament in which a Clarksville game was not decided by one run.

Four earlier nailbiters included an epic 15-inning, opening round, 12-11 win over neighboring North Butler on Monday (07.20).

With the victory, the Indians close the season at 28-8. The Vikings finished 30-11.

North Iowa also boasts a state baseball champion.

In Friday’s Class 1A title game in Carroll, Newman Catholic beat Moravia 11-1 in six innings to win the championship.

The game was scoreless through four innings before the Knights tallied seven runs in the fifth. The Mohawks got one run back in the top of the sixth before Newman Catholic closed out the game scoring four more in the bottom of the inning.

With the win, the Knights finished 28-9, with Moravia closing out at 29-4.

Also in State Softball, Wapsie Valley finished as the state runner-up in Class 2A, falling 7-6 in the title game against Grand View Christian Thursday (07.23) night. 

The Warriors tried to rally from down 7-4 going to the top of the seventh, but only scored two runs to fall just short of tying the game.

Wapsie Valley finished 21-8. Grand View Christian closed at 32-4.
