What’s Next for Iowa 9 / WIS 82 Mississippi River Bridge Project?

Construction of the new Mississippi River bridge between Lansing, Iowa and Wisconsin, has taken on a new look now that crews have connected the middle 200 feet between the previous east and west assemblies.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City office says it took most of the day on June 12th to lift the connecting span into place.

Hjelmstad says he took drone pictures of the construction process, while many Lansing residents took in the impressive sight.

Hjelmstad also notes that the “drink of choice” of those watching the process changed as the day got later.

With the old bridge down and the new bridge now connected from Iowa to Wisconsin, what’s the next construction milestone? Hjelmstad says pouring the bridge deck will be big, along with one notable project not involving the bridge directly.

The new bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2027.
