The new Mississippi River Bridge being constructed between Lansing, Iowa and Wisconsin is expected to mark a milestone this week with a “huge connection.”
The Iowa and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation (DOT) have announced that the center span of the new Iowa 9 / WIS 82 Mississippi River Bridge Project will be installed on Thursday (06.11) and Friday (0.12).
Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT’s Mason City District Office explains the process.
To make the connection, they will need to close the free car ferry and restrict other traffic on the Mississippi River.
In getting to this point in the construction, Hjelmstad says windy conditions have presented its challenges to building out the two bridge spans from each side.
The Iowa DOT will livestream the bridge connection at iowadot.gov/lansingbridge. The livestream is video only and does not carry audio.
Hjelmstad also notes that one of the last remaining remnants of the old bridge on the Iowa side of the Mississippi is being removed.
The new Mississippi River bridge at Lansing is expected to open in 2027.
