Bob was born on October 3, 1946 in Mason City, Iowa, to William (Bill) Earl Jones and Letha (Caruth) Jones. Bob had an idyllic childhood, playing with friends and riding bikes all over Nora Springs. In 1956, the family relocated to Rockford when Bill took over the Rockford Locker. Bob attended Rockford from 5th grade until graduation in 1965. Bob told stories in the summer about being out and about with friends playing all day, hearing the noon whistle and having to be home for lunch, and then going back out and having to be home by the time the street lights came on. Bob enjoyed playing sports for the Warriors – he was a 4 sport athlete playing football, basketball, baseball and running track. For a time he was the school record holder in the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds flat, and was named Homecoming King in 1964. He had an immense amount of pride for his hometown and school – Rockford.
After high school, Bob attended Mankato State University, majoring in physical education and playing football for the Indians. Bob had stories about proudly being called “a Phi Beta Kappa in the classroom but a numbskull on the football field!” by his coach Bob Otto. He always had lines for his kids like “No pain, no gain!” and “What makes you sick makes you well!” It was a joy for his family to take him to the Minnesota State-Mankato Homecoming Game in 2025, while we all silently knew it was his last.
Bob met Diane Kay Stauffer at a social gathering in Mason City, 1974, and they hit it off. They dated and then were married on February 22, 1975. Bob and Diane bought the Rockford Locker from his dad in 1976, and they put down roots in Rockford. Bob owned and managed the locker from 1976 to 2007. They also found time to open the Pizza Corral in Rockford from 1991 to 1998. In Bob’s retirement years, he loved long adventures delivering chickens for Hoover’s Hatchery in Rudd. Bob was a servant-hearted member of the Lions Club and also served on the Rockford City Council for 6 years. He enjoyed helping the Lions Club with the annual pancake breakfast, fish fry, and steak supper. They raised 3 children – Jacqueline (born in 1977), Matthew (1979), and Jeffrey (1983).
Bob loved going to his kids’ events in high school and college. He had a love for horses with Jackie, riding on trail rides and going to horse sales in Cannon Falls, Ankeny, Waverly and Waukon. He had major enjoyment watching Matt and Jeff play football for Central College, and enjoyed watching Jeff’s football teams perform on big stages – from the Fiesta Bowl to Ohio Stadium to Jordan-Hare to the Rose Bowl. He also loved a few amazing vacations to Puerto Vallarta, Florida, Colorado, and many family fishing trips to Canada. Bob enjoyed summer trips to Clear Lake with the extended family where he would take people fishing and pull a tube, and later on Bob, Diane, their kids and grandkids made a yearly trip up to North Star Lake in Minnesota. Bob loved Elvis, and every year he loved going to watch Elvis impersonator, Chris Olson, perform at Breezy Point, MN. Bob’s eyes would light up to see Elvis and seeing his kids and grandkids enjoying it right with him and Diane. Bob and Diane displayed unconditional love and support for their children, and later on, their grandchildren. They enjoyed making trips up to Minnetonka, Fairfield, and Auburn to Jonesboro to see their kids and grandkids.
Bob had a unique attitude about being diagnosed with cancer, as he wouldn’t let that define him. He would tell people “Well, they tell me I have cancer” in a way that showed he was a bit skeptical, and was going to continue living day by day and not create a bucket list or anything of the sort. Diane took care of Bob as well as she could and as long as she could at home, and on April 6 he was moved into the Nora Springs Care Center. Our family is forever grateful for their love and care for Bob as well St. Croix Hospice.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Bill (1981) and Letha (1994). He is also preceded in death by his father in law (Lyle in 2020) and his mother in law (Gladys in 2015).
Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Diane Kay (Stauffer) Jones, and their three kids Jackie (Jon), Matthew (Angela), and Jeff (Rachael), as well as his brother Dennis (Lynnette). Bob is also survived by 8 grandchildren – Ella, Ava, Joseph, and Isabelle Wolff; Madelyn, Faith, and Ian Jones, and Colt Jones.
