Share Charles City Tornado Stories Friday (05.15) at Community Center

This Friday (05.15) will mark the 58th anniversary of the massive tornado that devastated Charles City on May 15, 1968.

In conjunction with the Floyd County Museum, a public event remembering that disastrous day is set for this Friday (05.15) starting at 10 am at the Charles City Community Center, formerly the Senior Center. Those wishing to share their stories from before, during and/or aftermath of the twister that swept through Charles City are asked to call the Center at 641-228-3114.

The number is available 24/7, so you can leave a message if you’d like to participate, with stories requested to be limited to five minutes. If you have memorabilia to share, you’re encouraged to bring that, too.

Don’t have a story to tell, but want to listen to the tales and experiences of others? You’re welcome to enjoy the program as well, which also includes a slideshow of the destruction left behind in the wake of the F5 tornado.

A meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, berry fluff, dessert and beverage will be served starting at 11:55 am Friday. Cost is a $5 suggested donation for those 60 and older and $10 for those under 60. Those who share stories can eat for free.

Those wishing to dine are asked to reserve their meal by Wednesday, also by calling 641-228-3114. Leave a message if no one answers.

No membership with the Charles City Community Center is required to participate or attend this Friday’s Tornado Anniversary event.
