Driver Runs Into Fence at Lincoln Elementary Playground, Arrested for OWI

A Charles City man is facing OWI and other charges after he was accused of driving his SUV through chain link fencing at Lincoln Elementary School last weekend.

Charles City Police (CCPD) say 27-year-old Jonathan Neil Aurea Azores was arrested about 2:30 am Sunday (04.12) morning after his Toyota Highlander became entangled in the school’s chain link fence along 4th Avenue.  Azores has been charged with OWI, failure to maintain control, and striking fixtures upon a highway.

According to the criminal complaint, a CCPD officer witnessed Azores’ vehicle striking the fence, with the SUV then entering the playground area after Azores was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. After allegedly failing several field sobriety tests, Azores was taken in custody and, at the Floyd County Jail, Data Master measured his blood alcohol content (BAC) at .125%, more than one-and-a-half times the legal BAC limit of .08%.

Azores is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 1st in Floyd County District Court.

Charles City Schools Superintendent Brian Burnight said the district did not have an initial estimate on the cost of damages to the fence, which is now secured by orange safety fencing that is also attached to a nearby tree.

No playground equipment was damaged in the incident.
