Iowa Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026-Lightning Safety

The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) have joined together to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week, Monday (03.23) through Friday (03.27).

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Jason Webster says Monday’s focus was on lightning safety.

Tuesday’s (03.24) focus is on Tornado Safety, Wednesday’s (03.25) is Preparedness, Thursday’s (03.26) is Hail and Wind Safety, and Friday (03.27) wraps up with Flood Safety.

Webster says Wednesday will also feature the statewide Tornado Drill at 10 am.

In an effort to better track severe weather in Floyd County, a new camera will be mounted on the communications tower near Rockford. Webster says they’re still waiting on installation, but once operational, the camera will be a valuable tool to the National Weather Service.
