Sumner-Fred School Officials Assessing Damages from Bus Barn Fire

Sumner-Fredericksburg School District officials are assessing the damages from a fire to their bus barn in Sumner Friday (02.13) night.

In a social media post Monday, Superintendent Ryan Cunningham said, “We once again want to extend a huge thank you to all emergency responders for their quick action and protection of our fleet from the fire on Friday night: the Sumner and Fredericksburg Fire Departments, SEMS, the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, and our district staff.”

“We also appreciate Tieskoetter’s Collision Center for generously providing temporary use of their facilities and tools to help us stay operational.”

The fire resulted in the loss of one district vehicle; three additional vehicles were damaged and will be evaluated by the school district’s insurance company to see if they can be safely repaired and returned to service. There was also extensive damage to tools and service equipment and additional damage may be uncovered as the assessment continues.

Cunningham also cautions, “For public safety and to allow investigators and our insurance representatives the space they need to complete their work, please stay away from the property until further notice.”

The school district also has plans in place to maintain transportation services and support students and staff.

Cunningham closes, “It takes a community to respond and recover, and we are deeply grateful for the leadership, support, and kindness shown by our community, emergency responders, staff, and volunteers!  Thank you! Go Cougars!”
