Northeast Iowa Man Fires Gun, Flees/Hides from Law Enforcement, Forces School Lockdown

A northeast Iowa man is in custody after he fired a gun causing a nearby school to lockdown.

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) was called out to a dispute about 18 miles east of Waverly in the 2400 block of Viking Avenue, after a reported gunshot around 11:30 am Friday (02.13). At the scene, BCSO deputies learned 31-year-old William Shindoll of Waterloo had fled into a nearby field.

About three hours later, using a drone, authorities found Shindoll hiding along a tree line and he was apprehended.

Shindoll has been charged with assault while participating in a felony, a Class C felony; plus going armed with intent and control of a firearm by a felon, both Class D felonies; and first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Shindoll is being held in the Bremer County Jail on a $17,000 bond.

Wapsie Valley Junior-Senior High School, just outside of Fairbank,  was placed under a “shelter in place” order for three hours during the incident.

BCSO was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DNR, the Readlyn, Tripoli, Janesville, Waterloo, and Fairbank police departments, plus Bremer County EMA, Oran First Responders, and Fairbank Ambulance.
