North Iowa Man Pleads Not Guilty to Shooting Up Mother’s Home

A trial date has been set after a north Iowa man pleaded not guilty to attempted murder for allegedly shooting up his mother’s house.

According to Butler County District Court records, 55-year-old Michael Allen of rural Dougherty is now scheduled to stand trial starting March 10th on charges of attempted murder, a Class B felony; three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, all Class C felonies; and going armed with intent, a Class D felony.

Criminal complaints filed by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office say law enforcement was called to the 10000 block of Franklin Avenue on the morning of November 27, 2025, after a woman had called 911 to report that her son, Allen, was outside her home and had used a gun to shoot out the windows.  Iowa State Patrol (ISP) troopers and a sheriff’s deputy got to the scene and found Allen standing outside the home with a firearm.

A trooper shot Allen and Allen retreated to his own property, which is directly south of his mother’s home.  ISP then used an armored vehicle to remove three people from the home.

Allen was taken into custody and transported to a hospital in Des Moines for treatment of his injuries.

Investigators say Allen, who remains in jail on $175,000 cash-only bond, fired 20 shots into his mother’s home.
