Law Enforcement to sTEP Up Efforts to Identify Impaired Drivers During NYE Celebrations
Law enforcement officials, including the Charles City Police Department (CCPD) and Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, are urging safety as you prepare for New Year’s Eve parties.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s (GTSB) latest “Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) is in operation through New Year’s Day (01.01.26). That means drivers can expect extra law enforcement presence in an effort to cut down on drinking and driving.
Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver urges avoiding that altogether with a designated driver or using available rideshare services.
CCPD Captain Brandon Franke says being responsible also applies if you’re not heading out for a celebratory night on the town.
Shawver also notes that participating sTEP law enforcement agencies receive grant funding to pay for the added patrols throughout the holiday season.
Franke adds that they’re not just watching for impaired drivers.
According to the GTSB, 37% of Iowa’s traffic deaths are impaired related and an OWI conviction can cost you up to $10,000.
