A major North Iowa landmark is about to disappear. In this Community Conversations segment, Iowa Department of Transportation spokesperson Pete Hjelmstad joins us for the North Iowa Road Report to discuss the upcoming implosion of the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing. The conversation covers why the bridge matters so deeply to the region, what will happen on implosion day, and the extensive safety and traffic restrictions in place as crews prepare for the historic blast. Pete also shares what comes next for the project as construction activity increases on the new Mississippi River crossing.

When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
