Trial Pushed to Next Year for Charles City Man Accused of Continuous Sexual Abuse of Child

Trial has been delayed to next year for a Charles City man facing child sex abuse charges.

According to the criminal complaint filed August 26th by Charles City Police (CCPD), 34-year-old Dakota Janssen is accused of sexually abusing the same child on at least three occasions between November 2018 and July 2025.  Investigators allege that Janssen engaged in sex acts that were either done with force or against the will of the victim.

Court records show a warrant for Janssen’s arrest was issued on August 27th,  with CCPD taking him into custody later the same day.

On September 12th, just three days before his birthday, Janssen entered a not guilty plea to a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

His trial was initially set for December 9th in Floyd County District Court. However, last Wednesday (11.29), the defense filed for a continuance of at least 30 days because they needed additional time to review discovery and continue pretrial investigation, including deposing the State’s witnesses.

The State did not resist the motion and, on Friday (11.21), Judge Chris Foy approved the continuance and reset Janssen’s trial date for February 17, 2026.

Janssen remains free awaiting trial after posting bail of $25,000 in late August.
