Northeast Iowa Man Reports Burglary, Gets Arrested and Charged Himself

A northeast Iowa man who reported a burglary at his home ended up getting arrested and faces multiple charges himself.

Oelwein Police (OPD) say they arrested 30-year-old Michael Story, Jr., of Oelwein at about 10 am Sunday (09.07) morning following an investigation that started with Story reporting a burglary and shots fired at his residence on 3rd Street Northwest. He would eventually be charged with possession of a firearm suppressor, a Class D felony, plus disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and reckless use of a firearm, all simple misdemeanors.

According to criminal complaints, officers first responded to Story’s home at about 7:45 am Sunday and left the residence after the call was handled. So they thought. About 45 minutes later, officers returned after Story called again to report individuals on his property and more shots being fired.

During the second investigation, OPD seized several firearms, including a 9mm Hi-Point Rifle with a suppressor. However, Story could not produce the ATF paperwork required to possess the suppressor. He also allegedly admitted to shooting several rounds off inside his home and into the ground in his backyard. He later claimed he shot someone and did not care where his rounds went.

OPD adds that, during the second encounter with Story, he was told multiple times to not be disorderly while outside. But as officers were about to leave, Story came back outside and began to yell and cuss as he walked down the sidewalk. He was also determined to be under the influence and self-admitted to drinking beer and Crown Royal while officers were present.
