Student Ban on Personal Telecommunication Devices in Classroom in Effect

A new state law prohibits the use of personal telecommunications devices and accessories by students on school grounds from 8 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday.

Restricted devices include, but are not limited to, smart watches, cell phones, tablets and any present of future technologies.

Erik Smith, the new superintendent for the New Hampton and Turkey Valley school districts, says it will likely take some time for students to adjust.

Smith says younger students will probably cope better with the new rules.

Smith adds that the new legislation is aimed at improving the learning environment for the students.

Consequences for violating the policy range from a verbal warning for the first offense up to three days out-of-school suspension for the fifth offense.

Contact your school district on exemptions to the law that may apply.
