New Hampton Copes with Present, Future Water Issues

Chickasaw County received a disaster proclamation from the governor’s office in the wake of flooding caused by significant rainfall over August 17th and 18th.

For those impacted by the flooding, the declaration makes assistance available through the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and/or the Disaster Case Advocacy Program. That includes New Hampton, where Mayor Steve Geerts says excess water led to some issues for Mikkelson Park as well as some flooded basements.

In other water issues for New Hampton, Geerts says they continue to lay the groundwork for a new wastewater treatment plant.

The City is also feeling the cost crunch for the new plant. Geerts says it seems like every time they meet with project engineers and/or architects, the price tag goes up.

The DNR says the new wastewater plant needs to be operational by 2036.
