Algona, Mason City, Waterloo, Waukon Airports Get State Funding for Fiscal Year 2026 Projects
The Iowa Transportation Commission has approved $9.6 million for the Fiscal Year 2026 State Aviation Program, including over a quarter-of-a-million dollars at four north Iowa airports.
The Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funds aviation safety initiatives, system planning, and air service development activities. The Waukon Municipal Airport will receive a $30,000 AIP grant to cover most of the projected $37,000 cost to develop an ALP. The Algona Municipal Airport gets a $12,500 AIP grant, which will cover half of the estimated cost to replace its airport entrance sign.
Aviation vertical infrastructure programs provide funding for the maintenance and development of airport facilities such as terminal buildings, maintenance facilities, and aircraft hangars. Allocated state awards include over $120,000 for the Mason City Municipal Airport to construct a utility building, which covers about one-third of the estimated $360,000 price tag. The Waterloo Regional Airport gets $123,000 for terminal renovations, which almost pays for the entire project, estimated at $127,000.
Iowa DOT Aviation Director Tim McClung notes that the FY 2026 program prioritizes airport safety initiatives and development supporting Iowa’s economy. “It’s essential that airports have clear runway approaches and that other facilities are maintained with a forward-looking vision. This program builds a strong aviation system while leveraging federal, local, and private investment.”
