Charles City Begins Advertising for City Administrator Applications

The City of Charles City is now officially advertising for applications to find its next permanent city administrator.

In May, former City Administrator Steve Diers announced he would depart after over 11 years with the City to take the same position with the City of Clear Lake. His last day on the job was June 20th and the City has since signed a contract for Dan Gifford to serve in the post on an interim basis.

Gifford had worked as city administrator in Spencer before he retired. He has said he has no interest on a permanent basis.

Last Friday (08.01), advertising for candidates to submit their applications officially began, including an ad now posted on www.cityofcharlescity.org.

The City’s timeline has an application deadline of 4 pm September 3rd and calls to have a new city administrator starting sometime in November.

Meanwhile, the City also is looking to appoint a successor to the council seat that has been vacated by the resignation of Keith Starr, who attended his final Council meeting last Wednesday (07.30) night.

City Clerk Brittney Lentz said that, as of last Wednesday night’s planning session, two applications had been received for the position.

For those interested, forms are available on the City website, www.cityofcharlescity.org, or at the temporary City Hall location at 507 Clark Street. Applications are due by noon on August 11th.

Even with an appointment to fill the council seat, any eligible voter in Charles City could still file a petition to force a special election for the position.

In either case, that person would have to run for election on November 4th to remain in the council seat for a full term.
