Lola Evangline (Brown) Vest was born July 8, 1930 at rural State Center, Iowa, the daughter of S. Charles and Leila (German) Brown. She received her education in rural schools and graduated from State Center High School in 1947. After graduating she was employed by Central Iowa Telephone Company for several years.  On August 6, 1950 she was united in marriage to Robert Vest at St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center.  They became parents of three sons and one daughter: Michael (Angie) Vest of Gravois Mills, Missouri, Kevin Vest of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Neil Vest (deceased) and Lori (Jeff) Shook of Tripoli, Iowa.

Lola was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Wigwam-n-Wagon Camping Club, and the Heritage Club.  For many years she was a member of the Women’s Bowling Association and had bowled for 27 years with her husband on the Sunday Night Mixed League.

Lola greatly enjoyed camping trips with friends, and also the many bus trips taken with Heritage Club and Hometown Tours. Traveling with her husband in their motor home was also a favorite thing to do. She loved music of all kinds especially old-time country and the old hymns.  Trips to Branson, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee were favorites.

Lola was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her. Keeping the cookie jar filled for them was a favorite pastime. She was an avid reader and liked matching wits with all the game show contestants on T.V.

Lola was preceded in death by her husband in 2014; her parents; son, Neil; granddaughter, Holli; five brothers; and one sister. She is survived by her three remaining children; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
