Charles City Councilman Starr to Resign, Appointment Coming to Fill Seat

The City of Charles City is moving forward with plans to appoint a successor to the council seat currently occupied by Keith Starr, who has announced his resignation effective July 31st.
During Monday (07.210 night’s City Council meeting, City Clerk Brittany Lentz laid out the timeline to name Starr’s successor.
Lentz also presented a form to fill out for those wishing to express their interest in the soon-to-be-open council seat.
Mayor Dean Andrews says they’re looking for basic information for a position that would require whoever is appointed to run for election in November to remain in office.
After applications are received, the ball is in the Council’s court, according to City Attorney Brad Sloter.
Even with an appointment, any eligible voter in Charles City could file a petition to force a special election, which Mayor Andrews said the City would prefer to avoid, since the position will still be up for election in November. He also noted that conducting a special election would cost about $10,000.
