Spirit Lake Man Dies After Motorcycle is Hit by SUV in North Iowa

One person is dead and three are injured after an SUV and two motorcycles collided in north Iowa over the holiday weekend.

The Iowa State Patrol says the wreck occurred at about 4 pm Saturday just east of Thompson in Winnebago County. 21-year-old David Raak and 64-year-old Daniel Raak, both of Spirit Lake, were each operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling west on Iowa Highway 9, when an eastbound 2015 Buick Encore, driven by 95-year-old LeRoy Weaver of Buffalo Center, crossed the center line for unknown reasons.

ISP says the Encore sideswiped the motorcycle ridden by Daniel Raak and hit the other bike head on. The sideswiped cycle lost control and ended up on the north shoulder of the highway. David Raak was thrown from the bike and also landed on the north shoulder. The Encore went into the north ditch.

David Raak was killed in the crash, with Daniel Raak, Weaver, and a third person, 21-year-old Kyla Hudelson of South Dakota injured and all taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.

Forest City EMS and Lake City EMS also assisted with the wreck.
