Starting July 1: Illegal to Have Cell Phone in Hand While Driving in Iowa
Starting Tuesday (07.01), it is illegal for Iowa motorists to hold a cell phone, scroll through it or watch videos on it while driving.
That’s Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver, who says the goal is make the road safer.
Trooper Tom Williams with the Iowa State Patrol’s Mason City District Office says there will be an educational period to get used to the change.
That fine starting January 1, 2026, is $100. Fines escalate if there’s an accident causing serious injury or death. Exemptions in the new law include bus drivers, emergency responders, and people driving farm machinery.
Iowa State Patrol spokesman, Sergeant Alex Dinkla, adds that the new law does allow for one-touch activation, so you could buy a cell phone holder and answer calls in speaker mode. However, the best option is having your phone in “do not disturb” mode while driving to “take away that distraction, take away that temptation.”
