Charles City School Board Needs to Decide Soon on Bond Referendum

Charles City School District stakeholders could be asked to approve a bond referendum that could fund up to $50 million in renovations, upgrades and improvements to Charles City High School.
During their meeting Monday (06.09) night, the School Board heard details on possible options to approach a variety of needs on a building that hasn’t had any major work done to it since it was built some 65 years ago.
FEH Design’s Matt Basye laid out the proposals, with Option 1 estimated at almost $43 million over two phases and Option 2 to cost upwards of $50 million, also over two phases. He also presented various items that could be cut in order to trim the overall cost of either option.
Basye advised, whichever route the Board takes, a decision is needed soon.
Superintendent Brian Burnight also emphasized the importance of timing in putting the measure before voters.
Both bond options include the addition of a performing arts center.
Ralph Smith, with the Community Committee formed to provide input to FEH and school officials, said Option 2 was the best way to address one of the most important issues for Charles City.
Basye also provide “cost opinions” for renovating the old pool area of the former Middle School at North Grand Avenue to serve a variety of athletic functions for about $3 million.
The Board made no decisions on the parameters of a possible bond referendum Monday.
