Bleat! Bleat! And step aside Tom Brady, because “the goats” have arrived at Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC).
Director of Marketing Makenzie McNeill says FCMC has partnered with Driftless Rock Farm and Goats On The Go to clear out overgrowth on the hospital’s property in Charles City. The goats began eating their way around on May 29th and are expected to be here between 10 to 14 days depending on how quickly they clear the overgrown weeds and brush.
McNeill notes that goats are nature’s lawnmowers, able to reach pesky vegetation and overgrowth in places that humans can’t reach without the use of herbicides or equipment.
The community is invited to stop by to enjoy the eco-friendly entertainment, but be mindful the goats are contained with an electric fence, though they do have access to water and minerals to supplement the plants they are eating.
The goats began working on the wooded area located next to the patient parking lot. Once the goats have eaten through the shrubbery, FCMC will remove the dead trees with the goal to eventually create a space for staff and visitors to walk and sit in the shade.
An FCMC Facebook post Wednesday (06.04) indicated “the goats are still hard at work.”
