Travelers needing to cross the Mississippi River between Lansing, Iowa, and Crawford County, Wisconsin, will get some assistance from the Iowa DOT starting Wednesday (06.04).
The Iowa DOT District 2 office closed the IA 9/WIS 82 bridge on Saturday, May 17, when sensors detected movement exceeding safety thresholds. Iowa DOT is reviewing findings from the most recent engineering study and is evaluating ongoing construction for the new bridge occurring near the existing bridge. The department has not finalized any repair or reopening plans for the existing bridge.
In the meantime, the DOT will re-establish a shuttle and water taxi service Monday through Saturday, with scheduled departures starting as early as 6:45 a.m. and ending at 5:37 a.m. The service includes designated vehicle parking areas at the Lansing City Hall in Iowa, and the De Soto Community Center in Wisconsin. From those locations, a shuttle will drive passengers to the river landings where the water taxi will cross the river.
The service is free for all passengers. Again the water taxi will begin service this Wednesday.
A link to locations, schedules, and other details are available below.
For those wishing to drive their own vehicle across the river during the closure are reminded to use the nearest bridges at La Crescent, Minnesota/Lacrosse, Wisconsin, or Marquette, Iowa/Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. While the bridge is not open to motorized vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, the river channel below the bridge remains open.
