Northeast Iowa Standoff Ends Peacefully

A standoff at a Northeast Iowa home is over and has ended peacefully.
In a Facebook post just after 8:30 pm Sunday (05.18) night, the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public of “high police presence” at a home near the public library in Dunkerton.”At about 12:30 am Monday (05.19), an update said the standoff had been resolved peacefully and everyone could return home.
Black Hawk County Sheriff Nathan Neff says multiple deputies were at the scene on Williams Street in Dunkerton, including Black Hawk County SWAT, Negotiation, and Aerial Response Teams. Inside the house, 74-year-old James Parizek was allegedly armed with a gun and started making threats to other people around 6:45 Sunday night.
Deputies were able to get everyone else outside of the home, leaving Parizek alone. Authorities did not believe anyone else was inside of the home at the time. Neighbors were evacuated to Dunkerton High School.
Neff says law enforcement heard a gunshot a short time later, but Parizek exited the home on his own accord after about five hours of negotiations. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The incident remains under investigation regarding any possible criminal charges against Parizek.
The Iowa State Patrol. Dunkerton, Evansdale, Waterloo and Cedar Falls police departments, plus Dunkerton Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.
