Both Drivers Injured After Truck Strikes Tractor Near Charles City

Both drivers were injured when a UPS truck and a tractor pulling a planter collided along the Avenue of the Saints, shortly after 8 am Friday (05.09) morning, about one-and-a-half miles southeast of Charles City.

The Iowa State Patrol says the wreck occurred near Mile Marker 227 on Highway 218 with both the truck and the farm equipment headed north in the northbound lanes. The Ford F650 driven by 37-year-old Trevor Winfrey of Rockwell, struck the planter, causing it and the tractor, operated by 54-year-old William Ruzicka of Charles City, to spin around and enter the east ditch.

Ruzicka was ejected from the tractor and Winfrey’s vehicle also ended up in the same ditch.

Both men were transported by AMR Ambulance to Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) in Charles City. Their conditions are unknown.

The wreck initially shut down the northbound lanes of Highway 218 before the right lane was blocked off in the immediate vicinity of the crash site. Traffic on both northbound lanes in that area was restored by about 1 pm Friday after the wreckage was cleared by Chatfield Towing.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Charles City Police, Iowa DOT, and Charles City Fire Rescue also responded Friday morning.
