Law Enforcement to STEP Up for Cinco de Mayo Monday (05.05)

If you think you’ll “step up” your libations on Monday (05.05), know that law enforcement agencies across Iowa will also be “STEPping” up their presence.
That’s Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson, who ackowledges that a one-day Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP), is unusual.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), historically, about one-third of all crashes on May 5th involve a drunk driver. In 2019, 47 people died in drunk driving crashes during Cinco de Mayo, accounting for 38% of all traffic deaths.
