It was a sticky situation for some northeast Iowa first responders last week.
According to a Sumner Volunteer Fire Department Facebook post, shortly after 10:30 am Friday (03.21), crews were paged to report of a horse stuck in mud. While in route, the Sumner Municipal Light Plant was called to have their Digger Derrick truck also come to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a horse which had apparently slid down an embankment into an area that was supersaturated. The exact amount of time the horse spent in the mud is unclear.
The Fredericksburg Veterinary Clinic was called into to assist and oversee the well-being of the animal. After several attempts to coax the horse out on its own strength, the equine was hoisted from the mud.
About 40 minutes after arriving on scene, the horse was freed from the mud and could walk under its own strength up to the farm.
