Charles City Tax Levy to Take Slight in FY25-26

Charles City property taxes are set to take a slight dip for the 2025-2026 fiscal year starting July 1st, according to City Administrator Steve Diers.

The current levy rate of $15.96 per $1000 of taxable valuation will drop to just under $15.95 in ‘25-26, but will generate almost $4.4 million in revenue.

Diers says the next step on setting tax rates for the next fiscal year will be a public hearing at 6 pm on April 7th at the Charles City Public Library, including consideration for the consolidated tax levy rate.

Diers says the public hearing for the ‘25-26 fiscal year budget as a whole will then come on April 21st.

As for City operations, Diers says it’s too early to tell what impacts federal cuts will have on local programs.

Diers adds that when federal cuts are made, then state cuts are made, and often, cities are left to pick up the slack, though that’s becoming more difficult with the state legislature putting additional restrictions on revenue sources at the city and county level.
