New Hampton School Board Adds Sheriff

There’s a “new sheriff in town,” so to speak, on the New Hampton School Board.
On January 21st, the District 2 seat on the School Board opened up with the resignation of Bob Ayers, who was in his first term on the Board following his election in 2021. The then-remaining four School Board members opted to appoint a replacement to fill the vacancy with someone who must reside within the boundaries of Director District 2, which is within the city limits of New Hampton.
School Business Manager Christy Roethler says eight people submitted their interest by last Friday’s (02.07) deadline. During a special meeting Monday (02.10) night, the School Board appointed Chickasaw County Sheriff Ryan Shawver to take over Ayers’ post.
Even with Shawver’s appointment, anyone with District 2 could gather enough names for a petition to request a special election to fill the seat. That petition must be filed within 14 days of Shawver’s appointment.
Shawver will remain District 2 Director until the next regular school board election, scheduled for November 4th. At that time, the public will elect a board member to a four-year term and Shawver would have to run for election to keep the seat beyond that.
