North Iowa Native to Become Acting USDA State Director

A North Iowa native is set to become the new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Acting State Director in Iowa.

Current director Theresa Greenfield has announced she is departing her position effective at noon next Monday (01.20). Deputy State Director Kate Sand will then assume responsibility for the Agency’s role in providing loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for thousands of Iowans in rural areas.

Greenfield says, “It’s been an honor to serve the people of Iowa, from helping to fund healthcare needs in Grundy Center, Muscatine, Shenandoah, and Sioux Center, to supporting co-operatives in Butler, Boone, and Calhoun counties, to fostering the movement to clean energy on hundreds of livestock and grain farms, USDA is making a positive impact in the lives of Iowans. What a privilege it has been to be a part of that!”

Greenfield began her tenure as USDA State Director for Iowa in November 2021. Sand , who grew up on a corn and soybean farm near Joice in Worth County, has been with USDA Rural Development since 2004. For nearly 10 years, she served as the Community Program Director before taking on the role of Deputy State Director in November 2022.

USDA Rural Development has 11 offices across the state, including one in Waverly, serving the 1.3 million Iowans living in rural communities and areas.
