Relocation of City of Charles City Operations Uncover Old Records

The Charles City Police Department and City Hall offices are now in their temporary homes.

With City Hall, including the PD, set to undergo a $5 million renovation, city operations have split into two locations during the project: 507 Clark Street and 623 Beck Street, respectively. City Administrator Steve Diets told the City Council Monday (01.06) night that the transitions are mostly complete.

While packing up for the move, Mayor Dean Andrews says they discovered census reports from 1940, 1950, and 1960.

Those are the types of records Andrews says will also get a new home during the City Hall makeover.

Andrews says other “finds” include Council minutes from 1911 and a poster from 1996 commemorating the 150th anniversary of the State of Iowa.

He also thanks Charles City High School students for their assistance with the relocation.

The City Hall renovation project is expected to take at least about a year-and-a-half. Andrews says the City will get a better timeline estimate following the pre-construction meeting with the contractor, Kingland Construction of Forest City, on January 15th.
