North Iowa Man Federally Indicted on Weapons Charge

A Mason City man, originally charged with five counts of attempted murder in Floyd County, has now been federally indicted on weapons charges.
30-year-old Evan Stalker was arrested after the Floyd County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a report of shots being fired July 9th. Stalker was accused of calling a female victim and making threats to shoot up her car and house, southeast of Charles City.
At the victim’s residence, Stalker issued more threats against the woman and four other occupants in the home. Stalker allegedly fired his weapon, but there was no indication of any shots hitting the house, vehicles or any of the subjects inside.
Stalker had originally pleaded not guilty to five counts of attempted murder, all Class B felonies, plus one count each of being in possession of a firearm as a domestic abuse offender and first-degree harassment. His trial was scheduled to start this week in Floyd County District Court, but charges were dismissed in December pending the federal charges.
That federal indictment, unsealed last Friday (01.03), indicates Stalker is being charged with making a false statement during the attempted purchase of a firearm, the day before the alleged shooting incidents in Floyd County. The document notes that when Stalker tried to purchase a pistol from a licensed dealer on July 8th, he provided a false written statement that he had never been committed to a mental institution.
Stalker was scheduled for his initial appearance and arraignment this week in US District Court in Cedar Rapids.
