Iowa Law Enforcement to sTEP Up Thanksgiving Patrol Presence

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across Iowa to promote road safety during the Thanksgiving holiday season.
Trooper Tom Williams with the Iowa State Patrol’s Mason City District office says their latest sTEP continues through this Sunday (12.01).
Even with their extra traffic enforcement efforts, Williams says the ISP has again failed to reach its number one safety goal.
Williams says the number of fatalities on Iowa roads in 2024 surpassed the 300 mark this on November 19th.
According to the GTSB, during Thanksgiving week last year, November 19-26, 2023, 34 people died or suffered severe injuries on Iowa roads. Tragically, 40% were not properly restrained, a heartbreak that may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.
Additionally, GTSB reminds everyone that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving and to plan for a sober driver before heading out this holiday season.
Local agencies participating in the Thanksgiving sTEP include the New Hampton and Osage police departments, and Chickasaw and Floyd County sheriff’s offices.
