Charles City School Board Discusses Approach to $3 Million in High School Upgrades

No decisions were made by the Charles City School Board Monday (11.11) night on how to approach paying for facility upgrades to Charles City High School, a building that hasn’t had any major work done to it since it was built in 1960.

Board member Bruce Koebrick, on the facilities committee, led discussion of a “2024 Mechanical and Electrical Building Assessment Summary” that could parcel out upgrades based on an annual budget of approximately $400,000 for each phase.

Fellow Board member Josh Mack noted the longevity of that approach.

Koebrick said they could also opt to do all the improvements at one time.

Many of projects are mechanical/HVAC-related, given that CCHS is largely lacking in air-conditioning. Identified areas for AC include the kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasiums, locker rooms and the “infamous” circles.

Koebrick acknowledged the plan does not address any cosmetic upgrades.

No decisions were made Monday night, with the facilities committee to bring recommendations on how to proceed, possibly at the next School Board meeting.

The analysis of the upgrades and possible costs comes a year after a $28.5 million bond referendum to revitalize Charles City High School was voted down.
