New Wastewater Treatment Plant for New Hampton to Enter Design Phase

It was almost a year ago that the New Hampton City Council approved a facility plan for construction of a new wastewater treatment plant.

During their regular meeting Monday (11.04) night, Mayor Steve Geerts says the Council passed a resolution with Strand Associates for engineering services to develop preliminary designs for the facility.

Geerts says the City still needs to assess possible residential water and sewer rate increases to help bank more funding to build the new plant, with Strand also helping the City determine industrial rates.

The new wastewater treatment plant isn’t the only isn’t pricey item facing the City of New Hampton. Geerts says officials will be meeting with the City’s investment banker on how to pay for projects such as street improvements and a new tanker truck for the fire department.

If the new wastewater plant is operational by 2029, it would come seven years ahead of the 2036 deadline issued by the Iowa DNR.

With engineering, design and construction, the price tag for the plant is currently estimated at over $33 million.
