Future of Charles City Chicken Processing Facility Uncertain
It’s been almost three weeks since Pure Prairie Poultry (PPP) ceased operations in Charles City.
PPP had sought to reorganize under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy with liabilities between $100 million and $500 million owed to between 200 and 999 creditors, including over $500,000 to the City of Charles City.
That’s City Administrator Steve Diers, who says the plant’s failure is unfortunate for the almost 140 people who lost their jobs as well as over a million chickens whose fates remain up in the air.
Diers says the future of the facilities is also a mystery.
Diers adds that the future is also challenged by the facility being a small plant in a less than ideal location, yet, moving it wouldn’t be easy either.
Iowa’s United States Republican legislators are weighing in on the impact of the closure of Pure Prairie Poultry.
That’s Senator Chuck Grassley, who says despite the chicken processing plant receiving significant federal funding over the years, there’s not much Congress might be able to do to help producers impacted by the shutdown.
Second District Congresswoman Ashley Hinson wants to try to find ways to get plants like PPP reopened.
Hinson says one of her biggest concerns about PPP’s closure is its impact on the supply chain.
