Milling of Main Street in Charles City Underway

The $2 million rehabilitation of North Main Street through downtown Charles City is headed down the homestretch, with Heartland Asphalt of Mason City starting the milling process on Monday (09.23).
With head-to-head, two-way traffic now limited to the east side of North Main, crews have taken off about four inches of old asphalt on the west side of the street, from just north of the Main Street bridge to the Hulin Street intersection.
Bill Ries with Veenstra & Kimm, the project managers, says that, after the west lane of Main Street is complete, contractors will move operations to the east side. When this happens, two-way traffic will be shifted to the newly paved west lane.
During the asphalt work on both halves of Main Street, the only cross streets open are Clark, Hulin and Lane Streets. However, access to Clark and Hulin will also be impacted when it comes time for paving those intersections.
Charles City Police urge motorists to avoid Main Street if possible during the milling and resurfacing process. Drivers are also advised to use Lane Street when possible to access houses and businesses west of Main Street.
The repaving work is expected to take two weeks to complete.
