City Council Greenlights Charles City Application for $20 Million EPA Grant

The City of Charles City has taken its latest step towards making their pitch to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in hopes of landing a $20 million grant to fund a variety of City projects.
Monday (09.16) night, the City Council gave an optimistic City Administrator Steve Diers the official greenlight to submit their application to the EPA.
The City first began exploring an EPA grant to make upgrades to the Charles City Whitewater Course on the Cedar River. Things expanded from there and Diers says they continue work to finalize their overall list of projects.
With the grant a possibility, Councilman Patrick Lumley says he believes the City could be on the cusp of something special.
Diers also noted that their application, titled “Sustainability Over Susceptibility,” or “SOS,” appropriately ties in the narrative of one of Charles City’s most reformative events.
Diers says the City will submit their application by the end of this month or early October, with the next round of grant awards to be announced in November.
