Charles City Garbage Rates to Increase in October

Garbage pickup rates will go up next month for Charles City residents.
The City Council recently approved a “contract-allowed” request by LJP/Jendro Sanitation for a 3.3% increase in garbage fees based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the past year.
City Administrator Steve Diers outlined the new prices based on the garbage bin size.
Councilman Patrick Lumley noted that the City does not benefit financially from the increased fees, which also reflect LJP’s handling of more garbage in Charles City over the last 10 years.
Diers added that the size of garbage bins in use also reflect the increase in waste.
The price of the supplemental orange garbage bags will also go up, from $1.63 to $1.68 for the 15-gallon size and from $2.13 to $2.20 for the 33-gallon bags.
The rate increases take effect in October and will be reflected on the November bill.
