Surprise August Storm Changing Weather Protocol in Charles City

The storm that brought down numerous trees and tree limbs in Charles City the night of August 29th caught many residents and City officials by surprise.

That’s Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson, who notes that even the National Weather Service (NWS) was caught off guard, with their severe thunderstorm warning being issued after the initial brunt of the storm was almost over. Anderson says that has the City taking a new approach to sounding warning sirens for future weather events.

While the storm was a surprise, Anderson says the way citizens came out to help each other clear limbs and trees off streets and vehicles was not.

Over a week later, City crews were continiung with their cleanup efforts.

Initial indications from the severe thunderstorm warning from the NWS put wind gusts that night of August 29th at over 60 mph.
