Robert “Bob” Duncan, 83, Charles City

Robert “Bob” Duncan, 83, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City with his family by his side.

A funeral service for Bob Duncan will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at First Congregational Church in Charles City with burial to follow at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City, Iowa.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 4, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home and continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Robert “Bob” William Duncan was born July 19, 1941 in Kansas City, MO and adopted at six weeks of age by Donald George Duncan and Lucile Liggett Duncan. Bob enjoyed growing up on the farm in Colwell and spent hours playing in the hay loft. He graduated from Colwell High School in 1959 and attended one year of schooling at Mason City Jr. College.

Bob met and married Rita Logan, the love of his life in 1961. They were united in marriage at the Colwell Congregational Church in Colwell, Iowa on September 7. They later had four children: Jeff, Bill, Patti, and Wendi. Beyond spending time with family, taking vacations, and going camping, he enjoyed dancing, carpentry, making things for others, donating blood (gallons), and his duties to the church and Sheriff’s department.

Bob began his working life at the Oliver Tractor Factory (later White Farm) for 38 years. When White Farm closed, he went to work at Cambrex for 18 years. He held positions at both the Charles City Drive-in Theater and Movie Theater. He also volunteered for 34 years with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserve and the Search and Rescue team.

He wore many hats and was known by many. He was lovingly given several nicknames including “Barney Fife”, “Herb”, “SpongeBob”, “Mikey”, and “One Banana, Two Banana”. They say many people in Charles City only had one ear as Bob talked the other one off. He will always be remembered for his stories, words of wisdom, and sense of humor.

Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rita (Logan) Duncan; their four children: Jeff (Kim) Duncan of Marion, IA, Bill (Marsha) Duncan of Charles City, IA, Patti (Frank) Putney of Spring Grove, IL, and Wendi Duncan of Charles City, IA; their 11 grandchildren: Ryan, Kara, Allan, Hollee, Megan, Britton, Jessica, Sarah (Dan), Sam (Danny), Jesse, and Myckaela; two great-grandchildren: Madi and Max; brothers-in-law: Bruce (Janet) Delap and Joe Logan, Jr.; and sisters-in-law: Jeanne (the late Steve) Martin, Phyllis (John) Corey, and Ruth Logan Grey; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Donald and Lucile; parents-in-law, Jesse and Wyonna Delap and Joseph Logan, Sr.; sister-in-law, Penny (Delap) Jaegar; brothers- in-law: Steve Martin and Paul Logan; grandson, John Allan Ducan; and best friend (like a brother), Roger Sweet.

Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, 1205 South Main Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616 is in charge of local arrangements. Online condolences may be left on the Tribute Wall for the family at www.hauserfh.com.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
