Man Convicted of Killing Algona Police Officer Sentenced to Life in Prison

The man convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram last fall has received a sentence of life in prison.

44-year-old Kyle Ricke of Algona was found guilty following a four-day trial in Dickinson County last month. Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown prosecuted the case and said prior to the sentencing Tuesday (08.20) that Ricke earned the mandatory sentence of life with no parole.

Ricke took his opportunity to make a statement before his sentencing.

Several of Officer Cram’s family members also read victim impact statements in Kossuth County District Court before Judge Nancy Whittenburg handed out the sentence of life without parole.

Ricke’s sentencing comes a day (08.19) after his motion for a new trial was overruled.

Ricke will be transferred to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale for further processing by the Department of Corrections.

The 33-year-old Cram was also a member of the Nora Springs Police Department from 2013 to 2015.
