Northeast Iowa Regional Airport Gets $700,000 State Funding for Upgrades

A handful of North Iowa airports will share in almost $1.7 million in state funding for various upgrades and improvements.

The Iowa Transportation Commission Tuesday approved a total of $9.3 million for the fiscal year 2025 State Aviation Program to help some two dozen airports across the state to cover most, if not all, of the cost of their proposed projects.

A $400,000 Airport Development grant goes to Northeast Iowa Regional Airport of Charles City to construct a taxilane, with a total project cost of almost $584,000. The airport also received a General Aviation Vertical Infrastructure grant of $300,000 to construct a T-hangar, with a total price tag of $540,000.

Bill Kyle says it will greatly enhance the service the airport can provide.

Airport Development grants of almost $383,000 will go towards a total project of almost $547,000 to construct a hangar development taxilane at the Mason City Municipal Airport, with Osage Municipal Airport getting $54,000 towards an airport layout plan and narrative, with an expected total cost of $68,000.

Decorah Municipal Airport also gets a General Aviation Vertical Infrastructure grant of $300,000 towards the construction of a hangar and terminal with a total cost estimated at $417,000.

A Commercial Service Vertical Infrastructure grant of $121,000 will cover almost half of the cost for Mason City Municipal Airport to make terminal site improvements, including demolition and site restoration. Waterloo Regional Airport will get all of its $125,000 covered by the state to make hangar improvements and terminal interior upgrades.
