Flood Waters Slam Charles City

FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL WEDNESDAY MORNING FOR THE CEDAR RIVER AT CHARLES CITY…where major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse reported that At 2:30 AM Monday the stage was 21.3 feet, which at that time, was The maximum river stage in the previous 24 hours. The river is expected to rise to a crest of 21.9 feet this morning. It will then fall below flood stage of 12 feet tomorrow evening.

This crest compares to a previous crest of 21.6 feet on March 2, 1965.

During the 7 pm update Sunday (06.23) evening, City Administrator Steve Diers announced the closure of the Main Street bridge.

Prior to the closure, the Charles City Police Department reported they had noticed some possible damage to the bridge, which was built over 110 years ago. At about 2 am Monday (06.24), the Brantingham/Highway 18 bridge was also shut down due to rising waters.

This marks the first time since the 2008 flood that access between the north and south sides of town have been cut off.

Sunday afternoon, the Charles City Fire Department was called to assist an individual near Kellogg Street due to the construction site where they were working becoming flooded by rising waters. Crews were able to ensure he was evacuated safely from the area.

CCFD also noted that they and AMR Ambulance have stationed vehicles and staff on both sides of the river to be able to respond to emergency situations as needed.
