Brick Removal Continues, Concrete Work This Week on Charles City Main Street Project

The removal of decorative brick, part of the Main Street resurfacing and rehabilitation project in Charles City, will continue this week along with some concrete replacement work.

The latest update from Bill Ries with Veenstra & Kimm, the project engineers, says Popp Excavating, the underground contractor, began removals of portions of curb and gutter from Gilbert Street to Riverside Drive on the west side of Main Street and from Gilbert Street to Clark Street on the east side of Clark Street. In conjunction with the curb and gutter removals, the contractor has removed most of the brick that was scheduled to be removed from Gilbert Street to Clark Street.

Ries says this week will also see Wick’s Construction, the concrete paving contractor, scheduled to mobilize on to the site Monday (05.13) and will start replacing concrete that was removed last week.

Ries advises business owners from Gilbert Street to Clark Street that there will be more construction activity in front of their businesses this week, but care will be taken to ensure access is open to all businesses from at least one end of the block.  When possible, access will be maintained from both ends of the block.

Looking ahead, Ries says a water valve is scheduled to be replaced on Monday, May 20, which may cause some minor disruption to water service to some residents.  More information will be provided once the details are known.  Those affected will receive notification.
