Higher Learning Commission Completes Review of NICC

Northeast Iowa Community College appears to have been justified in its suspension of its president last fall.
In October, the NICC Board of Trustees voted to place Dr. Herbert Reidel on paid administrative leave pending a review of what was deemed a “confidential personnel matter.†In November, Trustees voted to seek termination of Reidel’s contract.
Reidel, who was hired in 2022, told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald in late October that he did nothing unlawful, unethical or immoral.
Last week, NICC received a report from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) regarding a complaint filed by Reidel on November 15th. NICC says, “The HLC determined that Dr. Herbert H. J. Riedel’s complaints lack merit and the accreditation agency will not be proceeding with any further investigation.â€
Kathleen Nacos-Burds, Ph.D., NICC vice president of teaching and learning, said, “Northeast Iowa Community College consistently works to meet all federal and state accreditation standards. The conclusion of the Higher Learning Commission is a testament to the ongoing commitment of the College to meet and exceed these standards,â€
David Dahms, NICC vice president for administration and finance, has been serving as acting president. Â
