Winter Driving Skills to be Tested This Week

Winter driving skills are expected be tested early this week with the first widespread snowfall event of the season forecast Monday (01.08) into Tuesday (01.09).

Around five inches are possible in north central and northeast Iowa, but areas south and southeast could see six to 12 inches.

Trooper Tom Williams, with the Mason City office of the Iowa State Patrol, says being prepared for winter driving begins before heading out on the road.

If you’re unfortunate that your vehicle leaves the roadway and becomes stuck, Williams advises against venturing out on your own to get help.

Williams also encourages filling your gas tank before traveling in inclement weather.

You can also check road conditions in advance through www.511ia.org or  www.iowadot.gov/travel.
